In this series, we are interviewing members of our club, so that you can get to know each other a bit better. Today we talk with Karen Green about her life and work in the region.

What brought you to the French Riviera?

I first came to south of France over 20 years ago with my children, to stay with some friends in Cagnes-sur-mer. I fell in love with the area and when I received a lump sum as a result of a redundancy payout, I decided to make the wise decision of buying my first property in Antibes.

I wanted to move full time but needed to wait until my kids went to university. So in October 2016, I sold my house in the UK and moved over full time, setting up my consultancy business to pay the bills!

Could you tell us about your professional career? What do or did you do for work?

I started my life as a retail buyer for UK retailers Tesco and Boots, I then transitioned to sales director for a number of food companies selling everything from sushi to Christmas puddings.

I realised there were alot of businesses who wanted and needed to win listings in retailers but didn’t have the knowledge and experience of knowing where to start – nor the budget to take on a full time sales director.

So I set up my business Food Mentor helping SMEs to win sales with an amazing range of big brands including Selfridges, Tesco and Lakeland

What does your company do?

Last year, I wrote my second book: Buyer-ology – know your buyer, sell more and sell better.

Which takes my commercial experience and makes it accessible to anyone who wants to learn the art of how to successfully adapt their sales pitch whether they are selling an idea, a product/service or themselves.

This has lead me to work with a number of entrepreneurs and corporations as a speaker, consultant and business coach focussing on how to market and sell better.

I am the UK sales advisor for the UN International trade centre and speak regularly at conferences and events.

Why did you decide to start your own business?

I started my consultancy for two reasons.

My original drive was to enable the smaller food companies challenge the bigger brands and get those all important listings whilst still make a profit!

Over the years that has developed into enjoying sharing my knowledge and experience with a wide audience and enjoying seeing my clients achieve the results that they are seeking

Could you share your thoughts on the club and events?

Networking is critical to all businesses. We cannot operate in a bubble and so need to connect with the right people.

I am a massive fan of LinkedIn ( but nothing beats meeting people in person, having a coffee and chat. Business Club Côte d’Azur offers this exactly.

Sometimes the challenge is finding the right people and the industry sector specific events are amazing for meeting the people you really want to get to know. And of course lots of different locations make it easy for most people to get there.

What is your best advice to others thinking about living or working on the French Riviera?

Best advice I can give is LEARN FRENCH!!

There is a diverse range of expats living on the French Riviera and the commonly spoken language is English.

I have been here for over 8 years and I am lazy and speak English when I can but I have also invested in regular French lessons to bring my language skills upto scratch.

I am not fluent but can get by in most situations. It makes everything easier and less stressful. But it does take time so in the meantime, find a French speaker to help support you through the inevitable challenges that you face whether that is French tax, immigration or medical situations.

I have found stumbling through a few French sentences does help get you a long way!!
